Group Plans for Pets and Livestock during
Emergencies
(XENIA,
OH) On March 1 and April 12, 2006, meetings were held at the Greene County
Combined Health Department to develop veterinary plans to care for pets and
livestock in emergency situations. The group is working in cooperation with the
Greene County Medical Reserve Corps. Participants included representatives from
the Veterinary Associates Animal Hospital, Greene Memorial Hospital, Montgomery
County Animal Welfare Disaster Committee, Greene County Animal Control, Greene
County Combined Health District and For the Love of Animals Pet-Sitting
Services, LLC. The group discussed issues such as returning animals to their
owners after an emergency, the lack of surge capacity at the Greene County
animal shelter and the need for more resources to be identified including a plan
to work with neighboring counties. The group emphasized that most people, in
the event of an emergency, are going to take their pets with them. Evacuation
plans need to include provisions for pets. The group will meet again to update
veterinary-related emergency plans, evaluate capacity in the County and examine
the role of animals in bioterrorism surveillance; for example, as early warning
signals for avian flu.
